What are buttons made of?

Specifically, buttons on clothing worn in early 1920s Germany? (Gee, I wonder what I could be working on....) It's amazingly hard to figure this out, and I'm not ready yet to just go with painted wood. I want to see what my other options are (so far, Mother of Pearl, Ivory and Enamel, but of those three, Enamel seems most likely...)
Edit: I'm finding more button materials... Horn seems like a strong possibility. Also coming up are metal, agate, glass, bone...
Also found a forum about historic fashion, where I'm registering in order to ask if any of the minds there know what I might best use...
Diet update: I did pretty well today...
Breakfast: Orange
Snack: Small amount of salsa and chips (yum! Probably only about six chips though)
Lunch: Beef Patty MRE (lot of food in those things; haven't had the drink yet though, I'll have it in a day or two, along with the cocoa from the last one)
Snack: None
Dinner: Salad, and debating whether there's anything I can reasonably add to it after the large lunch...
I may have one more small snack of salsa and chips later tonight, but that'll be it. Lots of water today too, and about 40 minutes of DDR again. Still haven't unlocked Daikenkai... I know it's there somewhere!
